I don't put much stock in New Years Resolutions because I believe each day (regardless of the date) we have the potential for a "restart". Therefore, "Today is your day" is one of my favorite lines from the Dr. Seuss poem Oh, the Places You'll Go! Some days, we wake up and the whole world seems to be there with you, celebrating. And then there are days when we want to hide under the covers, stay home and eat green eggs and ham. What differentiates the leaders is that even when we are stuck on a prickle-ly perch, we move forward. This can be scary, make us vulnerable, and we can we feel alone.
No matter what our good intentions in this world, there will forever be someone who will critique us (in some cases we are our worst critic). There will be people who will try to bring us down. So in those instances, especially when you don't feel your best, that is when you stand up tall and you do it anyway. It is in the most difficult situations that we learn the most about ourselves as leaders. We learn that we truly have no limits on what we can accomplish.
“Today is your day,” is about getting our minds in the right frame to begin (and sometimes restart) a journey. I understand this all too well. For several years I have been meaning to use my corporate and teaching experience as a basis for "leadership thinking". I just haven't done it. Not that I didn't have the skills. I allowed myself to consider, “what if it wasn't successful? What if it wasn't interesting? What would others say?” Obviously, this kind of thinking doesn’t allow me to start something new.
Each of us has the opportunity to learn from our past situations, and apply different approaches for the future to make them better - to make us better. We have the chance to rewrite and rewire our lives and the connections within them. That is what leadership is all about.
So who better to say it than the Doctor who has framed so many difficult life skills into a simple understanding "You're mountain is waiting. So.... get on your way!"
