KerryOn: Perspective of Travel

Travel can provide us with new perspectives. It can break down barriers and help us see the world in a different way, especially when we go beyond our country borders and learn about life across the globe. While I never had the opportunity to study abroad, I have built international travel into my life after I graduated college. With each trip, I’ve gained new perspectives.

My daughter and I recently returned from overseas travel to London and Paris. The last time I was in these cities was with my husband in 1999 and 2002, respectively. The experience of travel was very different than it is today. For instance, access to navigation is easier. My daughter and I never once got lost and always our tickets purchased in advance. Another is the sheer number of pictures. Honestly, an entire two-week trip in the past would equal the same number of photos we took just waiting in line to enter the Louvre. And most importantly, my life is quite different than it was on my first trips, and thus, so is my perspective.

Regardless of when I was in these cities, I enjoyed the major sites and scenic paths to explore. This time, however, during our exploration, we intentionally took a different perspective. We found our own special view of the sites. We simply looked up. This provided my daughter and I a unique perspective, seemingly unnoticed by tourists that hustled and bustled around us.

Finding this special view gave me an even deeper life perspective. What if, when we are in our everyday life, we take pause and seek a new perspective, a new way to look at how we navigate even the most mundane tasks of our daily life? We could try a new route home, stop at a destination we haven’t before, or take photos of something we find special. We might just find a new perspective and way to see the world, without leaving our neighborhood.
