There is something crisp about the start of the school year. Not just the cooler autumn air, but the newness of possibility: notebooks are blank, pencils are sharp, rows of crayons are still whole in the box. Classes haven’t yet begun which means there is no homework, no failed tests, no assignments that need turning it – truly it is the epitome of a fresh start.
Enthusiastically all across the country, kids head off on school buses with the optimism that this is going to be the year! The year to make new friends… The year to join the sports team… The year to finally figure it out... And yet, after a few short weeks haggard students and teachers begin to ask: when is the first break? The cycle continues the next year, the next year, the next year until there aren’t any school years left. I may say, it could be one of the reasons I achieved my doctorate - three degrees post high school allowed me a yearly chance for that fresh start.
Somewhere along the journey, something happened to our inner child regarding the fresh start. The one inside who believed all the world was a possibility and coloring time was by far the best activity during the day. I believe she/he/they are still inside us waiting for another fresh start.
The beauty is we no longer have to wait until the school year begins or the calendar dictates. We can begin fresh at any moment.
I have experienced the fresh start in my life. I left jobs I felt no longer served me and moved to areas I felt better aligned with my love of nature. On a smaller scale, I periodically revisit our daily and weekly household activities. This fresh start helps us reexamine how we run the schedule, organize meal preparation, or plan date nights. We all have the potential to begin again, and regain our enthusiasm for what is about to come. Go ahead, identify your fresh start and begin. After you get it figured out, I’ll meet you on the kickball field, because you are definitely my first pick on the team!
