KerryOn: The World is a Whirlwind

There are times when the world is a whirlwind. When it spins at an unmanageable pace. It is fast, it is blurry, it is a frenzied movement and can feel like everything is out of control. Each second, each hour, each day travels at a tremendous pace. A whirlwind can mess with equilibrium, leaving a dizzy wake in its path.

I have experienced a whirlwind world. It’s hard to escape when it overtakes, impossible to catch my breath, leaving me nauseous. I feel helpless, waiting for the continuous movement to stop. It is in these moments I am forced to overcome vertigo, to stop the spinning.

The thing about the world, however, is that it’s supposed to whirl. It spins at 1,000 miles an hour. We actually need it to spin. We don’t feel that powerful spinning rotation because we are in it, we are a part of the whirlwind. Yet, we each have our own personal whirlwinds that come our way. We experience different events that make us feel out of control, dizzy, breathless, and nauseous.

When I think about the whirlwinds in my world, I am reminded that each one comes and goes – like the nature of wind. The whirlwind can sometimes show up like a swirling tornado where I need to take shelter. Paradoxically, the whirlwind can sometimes show up at the perfect time to go kite surfing.

And sometimes I actually create the whirlwind in the world. I can start it by sharing thoughts and ideas that agitate others’ perspectives. I continue the whirlwind by not backing down from what I believe is right in the world. When everything whizzes by me, I look for the ways I can add to it by affecting positive changes. I realize I’ve always left a bit of a whirlwind around me, ever since I was a child. Instead of sitting silently when a situation wasn’t right, I was always ready to kick up the wind. It’s these types of whirlwinds that has defined the person I am, the person I am becoming.

The world is a whirlwind; and so am I.
